Dear members of the medical interest group on Ontario psychiatric hospitals,

I know we have not had recent communication, but I wanted to assure you that behind the scenes I have been working hard as your chair to ensure the priorities of our medical interest group are heard. Many of these priorities are in line with those of the section on psychiatry with respect to the obvious shortages of psychiatric manpower and mental health and addictions care generally, especially since the pandemic and it’s aftermath, and the need for increases in funds to support the work we do.

As you know, the OMA, our MIG, and section on psychiatry have worked hard through negotiations to start the difficult process of relativity adjustments, and the work is ongoing there. There have been percentage increases to fees for service billing and new acuity codes that will help those who do fee-for-service work.

For the members of our MIG like myself who are primarily salaried, I’ve been working hard to ensure that these increases are also passed on to those who do salaried work. It has been difficult ensuring that these increases come to salaried physicians in a timely fashion, and there have been delays and difficulties with our members achieving the Kaplan arbitration awards partly because of delays in gathering information from the different sites and because of thresholds that are applied to salaried physicians preventing some increases.

I’ve had several meetings with both negotiations and communication with PSA and tariff committees, and I’m now embarking on meetings with other salaried physician groups, including laboratory medicine, and pathology to ensure that salaried physicians are not excluded from the increases that will occur with the upcoming negotiations.

A message from Dr. Angela Ho:

The Ontario Psychiatric Association needs membership and support from all Ontario psychiatrists, to continue advocacy work for our profession and patients in areas such as Mental Health Act Law reform and MAiD. This work is independent of the OMA. An intro letter and flyer outline OPA work and member benefits, including discounts with partners and affiliate programs.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.

Yours truly,
Dr. Suzanne Allain, MD FRCP(C)
Chair, MIG on Ontario Psychiatric Hospitals
